All These New Ones

When did all this 'neo' prefixing start?

'Neo-liberal'. 'Neo-conservative'. 'Neo-Darwinian'.

Was it the Matrix?

OK so a 'neo-con' (being former lefties converted to, eh, righties with an invasive attitude) is actually distinct from a traditional conservative and the neo- prefix is at least linguistically justified. But neo-liberal? Who or what are they?

Is it too obvious to say that users of these terms hope they will subconsciously link them with everyone's favourite neos - neonazis? Yes folks, just add 'neo' to your least favourite political label for instant added sinisterness. More to the point, since we're so fond of Greek, are there such things as paleoconservatives or paleoliberals, ?

Liberals no, conservatives yes. Pat Buchanan and his fragrant daughter Bebe is a paleo-conservative. Sort of muscular populist stuff...

Still, I wonder if you're onto something with your point about "neo" being utilised in a lot of political discourse

Thanks for the comment. I've removed pre-publish comment moderation as, lets face it, I'm not exactly being inundated with them.

I heard the Venezuelan ambassador on Friday's Morning Ireland talking about 'traditional neo-liberals' and my head started spinning. Too early in the morning I guess.

oh oh, traditional neo-liberals...

That can't be right, or can it?
